Cycling
Amsterdam is the cycling capital of the world. Rent a bike from MacBike or Donkey Republic, it is genuinely the fastest, most enjoyable way to see the city. Watch for the dedicated bike lanes.
Trams & Metro
GVB trams and metro cover the city comprehensively. Buy an OV-chipkaart or use contactless. Trams 2 and 12 cover most central sights.
Canal Boats
Rederij Lovers and others run hop-on hop-off canal boats. A slow boat tour at dusk is one of the city's great pleasures.
General Safety
Very Safe Amsterdam is one of Europe's safest cities. Pickpockets in tourist areas and around Centraal Station, keep bags in front.
Cycling Safety
Give way to cyclists, they always have right of way. Never walk in a bike lane (marked in red asphalt). The bike traffic moves fast.
