Berlin
BER · Berlin Brandenburg International — opened 2020. S-Bahn to central Berlin: ~30 min, €3.80.
Frankfurt
FRA · Frankfurt am Main. Germany's busiest hub and major European gateway. S-Bahn (S8/S9) to Hauptbahnhof: 11 min, €5.30. Lufthansa's primary hub.
Munich
MUC · Munich International — second busiest in Germany. S-Bahn to city centre: 40 min, €13.60.
DB Rail
Deutsche Bahn connects major cities. Berlin–Frankfurt: ~4h by ICE high-speed. Book at bahn.com. The DB app is excellent.
Currency
Euro (EUR €). Germany is notably more cash-oriented than other Western European countries, especially in Berlin. Always carry euros.
Cash Culture
Many Berlin restaurants, bars, and smaller shops are cash-only (Nur Barzahlung). Frankfurt is more card-friendly. Always have cash as backup.
Tipping
Round up or add 5–10% — tell the server the total you want to pay rather than leaving cash on the table. "Stimmt so" means "keep the change."
Pfand
Bottles and cans have a deposit (Pfand) of €0.08–0.25. Return to any supermarket for a refund — there's a machine by the entrance.

Berlin
Best: May–SepCold: Nov–Feb Continental climate. Hot summers (25–32°C). Cold grey winters. Summer evenings are long and magical.
Frankfurt
Best: Apr–Oct Similar to Berlin but slightly milder. Christmas markets (Nov–Dec) are a Frankfurt highlight.
Language
German (Deutsch). English is very widely spoken in both cities, especially Berlin which has an enormous English-speaking expat community.

Berlin English
Berlin functions almost entirely in English. Menus, museum signs, and nightclub flyers are often English-only. Among the most English-friendly cities in Europe.
Schengen Area
USA, Canada, UK, Australia can enter visa-free up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
ETIAS
EU pre-clearance system for visa-exempt visitors expected to launch. Check travel.ec.europa.eu.
Trains
Germany's high-speed network (ICE) is outstanding, connecting major cities quickly and comfortably. The Deutschland-Ticket offers unlimited regional travel for a flat monthly fee.
City Transport
U-Bahn (subway) and S-Bahn (suburban rail) systems are clean, punctual, and run on an honour system — but inspectors do check, with steep fines for fare dodging.
Cycling
Both Berlin and Frankfurt are highly bike-friendly with extensive cycle lanes. Rental bikes are widely available via app-based services.
General
Very Safe Germany is very safe. Berlin and Frankfurt are among Europe's safest major cities.
