Caribbean Islands

Each island a distinct culture, cuisine, and character. Cuba stands apart: a time capsule of extraordinary music, architecture, and humanity unlike anywhere else on earth.

Cuba β€” Havana
HAV Β· JosΓ© MartΓ International β€” 20km from Old Havana. Official yellow taxi: CUC $25–35. Negotiate before getting in.
US Travellers to Cuba
US citizens can travel legally under specific OFAC license categories. Most US airlines fly direct from Miami, New York, and other hubs. Check current OFAC regulations before booking.
Getting Around Cuba
Vintage American cars (almendrones) for local transport. Viazul buses connect cities. Private taxis (particulares) for flexibility. Rental cars are scarce β€” book months ahead.
Currency
Cuban Peso (CUP) β€” Cuba eliminated the dual currency in 2021. USD and EUR accepted at tourist establishments. Bring all the cash you will need β€” US bank cards do NOT work in Cuba.
Cash is Essential
No US bank cards, no reliable ATMs for foreign cards. Bring more than you think you'll need in EUR or CAD (USD faces a conversion penalty at some exchange points).
Tipping
Important and genuinely meaningful in Cuba. Musicians, guides, casa hosts, restaurant staff β€” $1–5 USD goes an extraordinarily long way. Always tip in person, in cash.
Cuba
CST β€” Cuba Standard Time
UTCβˆ’5 winter / UTCβˆ’4 summer. Cuba observes daylight saving time.
Vs. US Eastern
Cuba is in the same time zone as US Eastern Standard Time in winter, and US Eastern Daylight Time in summer.
Havana & Western Cuba
Best: Nov–AprHurricane season: Jun–Nov Tropical. Dry season (Nov–Apr) is warm and glorious (22–28Β°C).
Best Months
February & March are considered the sweet spot β€” dry, not too hot, and outside peak Christmas/New Year pricing.
Language
Spanish (Cuban dialect) β€” Cubans speak quickly and drop syllables. Warm up with basics and Cubans will meet you with enormous friendliness.
Key Phrases
ΒΏQuΓ© bolΓ‘? β€” What's up? (very Cuban)
Asere β€” Friend/mate
La cuenta, por favor β€” The bill
ΒΏDΓ³nde hay mΓΊsica? β€” Where is there music?
English
Limited outside major tourist hotels. In Old Havana some restaurant and hotel staff speak basic English. A few Spanish phrases reward you enormously.
Tourist Card
Most visitors need a pink tourist card β€” available from airlines or Cuban embassies. $25–50. Valid 30 days, extendable once in Cuba for another 30.
US Citizens
Legal travel under OFAC license categories. "Support for the Cuban People" most commonly used. Keep records of how your trip qualifies.
Health Insurance
Cuba requires proof of travel health insurance for entry. Some airlines include it in the ticket price β€” confirm before travelling.
General Safety
Very Safe Cuba is one of the safest countries in the Caribbean. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. Cubans are extraordinarily warm and hospitable.
Emergencies
106 β€” Police
104 β€” Ambulance
105 β€” Fire
Practical Tips
Stay in casas particulares (private Cuban homes) β€” better experience, better value, money goes directly to Cuban families. Jineteros (touts) in Havana will approach you β€” politely decline and keep walking.
