Australia

The world's largest island continent — extraordinary wildlife, ancient Indigenous cultures, world-class wine regions, the Great Barrier Reef, and cities that consistently rank among the most liveable on earth.

Melbourne
MEL · Tullamarine International — SkyBus to Southern Cross Station: 30 min, AUD $22. Taxi to CBD: AUD $55–75.

Distances
Australia is vast — Sydney to Melbourne: 1h flight. Sydney to Perth: 5h flight. Domestic flights are essential for multi-city trips.
Currency
Australian Dollar (AUD $)
~0.65 AUD = 1 USD. Cards accepted everywhere. Australia is almost entirely cashless — contactless payments universal.
Tipping
Not expected or obligatory — Australia has minimum wage laws that mean hospitality workers earn a living wage. Rounding up or leaving 10% for exceptional service is appreciated but never assumed.
Value
Australia is expensive. Sydney and Melbourne rival London and New York for costs. Restaurant main: AUD $25–50. A pint of beer: AUD $10–14. Coffee: AUD $5–6 (but extraordinary quality).
Eastern (AEST)
Sydney · Melbourne · Brisbane
UTC+10 (AEST) / UTC+11 (AEDT summer). Note: Queensland (Brisbane) does NOT observe DST.
Central (ACST)
Adelaide · Darwin
UTC+9:30 — Australia has a genuine half-hour offset. Adelaide observes DST; Darwin does not.
Western (AWST)
Perth
UTC+8 year-round. Perth does not observe DST.
Sydney & Melbourne
Best: Sep–Nov (spring), Mar–May (autumn) Temperate. Summers (Dec–Feb) are hot. Melbourne is famously unpredictable — "four seasons in a day."
Queensland & Great Barrier Reef
Best: Jun–Sep (dry season)Wet/cyclone: Nov–Apr Tropical north — hot and humid. Dry season is ideal for reef and rainforest.
Seasons Note
Australia's seasons are opposite to the Northern Hemisphere — December is midsummer, June is midwinter. Christmas on the beach is a genuine tradition.
Language
English (Australian variety) — "G'day" is genuinely used. "Arvo" = afternoon. "Servo" = petrol station. "Brekkie" = breakfast. Australians are famously warm and informal.
Indigenous Context
Australia has 250+ Indigenous language groups. "Welcome to Country" ceremonies are an important part of Australian culture — participate respectfully.
eVisitor / ETA
US, UK, EU, Canadian citizens apply online for an ETA at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. AUD $20 fee. Up to 90 days per visit, 12-month validity.
Customs
Australia's border control is strict — declare all food, plant matter, and wooden items on arrival. Biosecurity is taken very seriously.
General
Very Safe Australia is very safe. Natural hazards (UV radiation, ocean rips, wildlife) are the primary concern rather than crime.
Emergencies
000 — Police, Fire, Ambulance (Australia's emergency number). 112 also works from mobile phones.
Nature Hazards
Slip-slop-slap: sunscreen is essential — UV levels are extreme. Swim only at patrolled beaches between the flags. Observe wildlife at a distance — many Australian animals are genuinely dangerous.
